OOH CRICKEY, WOT A SCORCHER ! mega-demo by TLB & Respectables
Review by IKI
This is the final demo from the Lost Boys. It makes me think of the
Life's a bitch : it was released on the Dusseldorf Messe, and it
contains few screens. But it is the most original ST-demo ever made !!!
Then it is (far away) my favourite demo in the ST-scene.
The design was extremely well worked : before each screen you can see
a marvellous picture by Spaz (one by Tanis).
The whole demo can be controlled with the joystick (pressing on
the button will replace the usual spacebar-hitting). The screen-loader
is a very simple screen : you can see the number of sectors to load in
the bottom, a text telling you the credits flashes in the middle of the
screen, and in the top a logo "Loading and Decrunching" is appearing
progressively with a nice effect !
After some seconds you are in front of the intro. Ahah, a funny
picture by Spaz, representing -I guess- the Lost Boys on a desert island.
I press the button... Then a rotating starfield (no !!!!!) and a size-
changing text appears (it goes toward you, stays for a few time and then
disappear...) Here are told the greetings. A nice soundtrack is played
meanwhile.
Now the menu !! Another game ! This time it's a fractal game :
You can see a plane (at least its reactors), that you can control and
make cross a large region filled with mountains, artificial obstacles,
etc. You can go to the left, to the right, to the top (to avoid the
obstacles) and to the bottom (to stop and select a screen). You can change
you speed by pressing the button and using the joystick directions up or
down (or use + and - on the keypad). The screens are represented by a
grey square on the ground, surrounded by an orange square. Just land on
the grey square and press the button to load a screen. The game is quite
hard for somebody who never plays games (e.g. me), but I managed anyway
to see all the screens.
1/ THE CHAINSAW MASSACRE.
This screen is quite funny, though its coding is not excellent.
You can see a man walking in a parallax hall (like in the Union Demo).
Then this man discovers a bisounours, oops, a CareBear, chained on the
wall ! And what does he do ??? He takes his chainsaw (which never leaves
him...) and begins to ... You know what I mean ! I won't say more.
The music is nice : it's a soundtrack which features the noises of
a chainsaw !!!
2/ KONZ or THE-DEMO-WITH-A-GERMAN-NAME-THAT-I-CAN'T-REMEMBER-BECAUSE
I-CAN'T-SPEAK-GERMAN-I'M-SORRY
This is a screen which is inspired from BUDBRAIN (Amiga). It is
another multiple-screens-screen, with a good soundtrack (Konz, konz...)
and some great mathematical effects (e.g. lots of circles growing on
the screen, a mega-show with millions of lines, a superb clock, ...).
Usually I don't like this kind of screen, but I loved this one !!!
3/ A-BRIEF-HISTORY-OF-TIME (or something like that ?)
Eheh, of course, another GREAT screen... This time Manikin shows
us four usual screens (first a screen with 25 little scrolls disting,
then a screen with many doc-balls, then another one with a disting
background and finally one with the starballs of the DSOTS. And a
disgusting fact is that these four screens seem to be animated at the
same time !!! Indeed, Manikin used the hardscroll technique to change
the screen, and the results are amazing... See yourself !!! Of course
there's a (big-)scroller in the screen. I love this kinda screen...
4/ WHAT-A-BUMMER
This is the guest-screen by the Respectables. It was coded by a
cool guy named DUKE ALLINGTON. He has improved a lot since his screen
for the DARK SIDE OF THE FORK demo... His screen impressed me so much
that I watched it for about one hour !!!! The design is EXCELLENT, there
is not ANY bug, the graphics are very good !!! There are some starfields
and starballs, and growing texts, and many fonts, and a soundtrack, and
some nicely designed rasterlines (two exactly), and a superb Respectables
logo, etc. It's really worth looking at !!!
5/ YOUR-MIND-IS-AN-ASHTRAY (?)
This is the Digital Insanity's screen. He coded for us another ...
Snurkle scroller (the rotating one !), but this time the fonts are
about 100 pixels high !!!! And it's disgusting ! You can see many effects
(so much that even when the text wraps, the effects don't wrap !)
Behind this scroll is a one-plane-sprite (LOST BOYS), and a nice effect
with lots of vertical scrollers, obtained with the technique used for
scrolling 25 horizontal scrollers... But this time it's hardware scroll !
Another masterpiece... (Though I don't like the rasters in the text)
6/ THERE-AREN'T-SHEEPS-IN-OUTER-MONGOLIA (??)
Yes, it's another great screen !!! This time you can see a marvellous
effect : a one-plane text (about 8 characters per serial) appears, then
grows until you believe that it's behind you !! ('understand ?) There
are some other things which appear : a starfield, a starballs (like in
Prehistoric Tale's hall of fame), a draught-board.... I really like all
these mathematical screens !!!!! Once again the music (by Guess-who) is
unknown and wonderful !
7/ SOME-THINGS-SEEM-TO-APPEAR-IN-THE-SPACE (???)
This is the final "normal" demo-screen. I don't like this one much
because it's not very original : it's rather like the intro of the
Skid-Row Demo (the balls, ...), without a soundtrack but with a
Vectorballs-scroller. And... a starfield ! The draught-board is
relatively original (it features a sort of third dimension).
I suppose you'd like to have more details about this screen,
but I didn't look at it for more than 2 min. !
8/ DATA-DISK : If TLB release a data-disk with some demo-screens
in it, you just have to choose this screen and insert you disk.
Since it still hasn't happened, I can't say more about this !
(I think that this idea is stupid : why not supply a main menu,
simply ???????)
9/ RESET-DEMO : Rhhhaa, the credits... A soundtrack... And some
pseudo-vertical-rasters ! It's a long time since I last saw this kind
of screen (actually, yesterday, when I had a quick look at my screen
for the Phaleon-Demo...) The rasters modify themselves, but the effect
is poor, because the rasters move too quickly !!! Too bad.
That's all ! There's a hidden screen (coded by Nick of TCB !), but
I didn't find it. Help me !!!
DON'T WAIT, GET THE O.C.W.A.S DEMO !!!!!
YOURS SINCERELY, IKI.
